Dear Friends,
2020 has been laden with challenges. As we reflect, we are grateful.
First, we are thankful for being spared by the Glass Fire on Howell Mountain. Although many of our neighbors experienced loss of property, Howell Mountain Vineyards and the Beatty Ranch were spared from this devastating fire. We give thanks to CalFire and the volunteers that worked to contain and extinguish the Glass Fire before it reached our property.
Next, we are thankful for the fact that we will be producing estate wines in 2020. Due to the containment efforts, the fire and smoke stayed to the northwest of the vineyard, leaving the vineyard and unpicked fruit untouched. We have taken efforts to mitigate any potential taint from the smoke. So far, it looks like there is little evidence of smoke taint in the wine.
Lastly, we would like to thank you for your support. Even with the myriad of challenges that 2020 presented, we are optimistic! All of our wines received 90+ point ratings and we are excited that our soon to be released 2016 Cabernet Franc was named the Best Cabernet Franc in the world. Watch for more details upon release. Your enthusiastic support of our wines has been heartfelt.

2016 Cabernet Sauvignon
92 points, American Fine Wine Comp
At first sight, you see the rich, dark color produced by the smaller berries in the 2016 vintage. In the glass, the wine exhibits a bouquet of blackberries and creme de cassis with a dusty undertone of black volcanic soil. On the palate, the wine exhibits firm tannins from the start with underlying notes of dark blackberry and black currant fruit which are focused in the center of the palate. The wine finishes with hints of tobacco along a deep, dark layer of fruit and grippy tannins which provide structure to the finish and ageability to the wine.
Our 2016 Beatty Ranch Reserve Zinfandel embraces the spicy characteristics from these old vines - the oldest n the entire appellation. In the glass, the nose bursts with black pepper and Asian spices with deep underlying black cherry cola fruit notes. At first sip, the spice and tannins dominate the palate. Black cherry fruit begins to break-through under the chorus of spices and focuses the fruit deep into the palate supported by bright acid and firm tannins giving this wine ageability into the next 10 years.
