Howell Mountain Vineyards Beatty Ranch Zinfandel

Beatty Ranch Zinfandel

Our reserve Beatty Ranch Vineyard designate Old Vine Zinfandel is a hand selection of our best barrels of Zinfandel from this heralded property. Darker in profile than our other Zinfandel offerings, this seductively smooth wine reveals an intoxicating nose of brambly blackberries, blueberry compote, boysenberry syrup, sweet tobacco, roasted coffee, and slight hint of black cardamon. Full bodied with excellent concentration and a silky tannic structure, this wine finishes long and smooth with balanced acidity, and a beautifully textured mouth feel.

95 points - Black and white pepper lead the way into this structured, beautifully made wine, which is sourced from pre-Prohibition-planted blocks from the estate vineyard. Leather, blackberry and a grainy, grippy texture highlight the explosive flavors. It’s well balanced, with both the power and grace to age. Enjoy 2020–2025.

92 points - From the estate grower of this ranch, this red is thick, rich and viscous in black cherry, cola, cinnamon and oak. Acidity and earthy mineral elements of stone and graphite underscore its complexity and ultimate elegance as well as mountain terroir.

91 points - Structured tart red cherry and orange peel accent a robust grip of tannin and weighty power in this bold wine, made in small amounts from the mountain site. Black pepper, licorice and cola contribute spicy seasoning against the bigger notions of fruit and texture.

91 points - This comes from the producer’s own estate and from its top blocks of old vines. Spiced, it’s also herbal in cedar and sandalwood, in addition to black licorice. Thick and spicy, it has enough acidity to brighten denser pockets of blackberry and black cherry. It shows plenty of structure for long-term enjoyment.

90 points & Cellar Selection - This is a concentrated, dark and brooding wine from the producer’s well-known property, sparkling in acidity despite its intensity of weight and length. Blackberry and nutmeg sit atop a soft integration of tannin and oak. Drink now through 2020.
