2013 "Old Vine" Zinfandel

Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

Vintage Notes

The 2013 vintage in Howell Mountain was every bit as good as the critically acclaimed 2012 vintage in terms of yields and quality. Like 2012, this vintage offered an excellent growing season with temperate conditions, giving way to beautifully ripe complex fruit and balanced acidity and supple tannic structure. Though the wines are showing to be approachable at a young age, 2013 will be an excellent vintage to lie down next to your 2012s to compare over the years to come.

Tasting Notes

Our 2013 Old Vine Zinfandel derives from 101 year old vines and is clearly proud to be a Zinfandel as it leaps from the glass with heady aromas of wild raspberries, black plum, cherry cola, baking spices, cloves, and cracked pepper. Medium bodied with bright acidity and dusty tannins this shows wonderful aging potential as this Zinfandel blossoms with ample time in the glass - gathering palate weight and rounging out seamlessly. The wine finishes long and lifted, and begs for a second sip… and before you know it, the bottle is gone. Enjoy now with at least a 30-minute decant, or lay it down and enjoy over the next decade.

"Briary wild berry aromas open to complex, well-structured flavors of blackberry, licorice and cracked pepper. The tannins are big, but fleshy and ripe. Drink now through 2024.

2012 "Old Vine" Zinfandel - Limited

Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage in Napa will go down as one of the best vintages in recent history. With near-ideal spring bud break and steady owering producing an even fruit set, the 2012 vintage provided a near record crop with high quality fruit. A lengthy stretch of warm days and cool nights during the long summer months produced fruit with a nice balanced structure and acidity. This growing season lead to beautifully complex ripe fruit, and is clearly exhibited in our 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel.

Tasting Notes

Our 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel oers a gorgeous bouquet of oral blackberries, cherry cola, jammy red plum, dark chocolate, and black pepper. On the palate the wine is full and elegantly textured, with balanced acidity and a polished tannic structure leading to a long juicy nish. This wine is showing well now but promises to age well and can be enjoyed over the 5-10 years.

"Sourced from vines that date back more than 100 years on the Beatty Ranch, this wine is appropriately robust, a big, syrupy concentration of baked blackberry and plum. Soft in tannins and structured, it finishes with a complexity of vanilla and black cherry.

"Aromas of blackberries, cherries, and plums mingle with hints of white pepper, vanilla, and cola on the nose. A sip delivers flavors of bramble fruit, cherry, and plum that flow into traces of spice, earth, and toasty vanilla. A plush red with lively highlights, enjoy a bottle with a cheddar burger."

2011 "Old Vine" Zinfandel - SOLD OUT

Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

Vintage Notes

Thanks to the cool and even growing season, 2011 produced the most balanced Zinfandel crop seen in years with good structure and natural acidity. The overall crop was light as with most varietals, leading to smaller grapes and a greater skin to pulp ratio, thus producing a more structured and bigger style Zinfandel than in 2010.

Tasting Notes

Our 2011 Old Vine Zinfandel exhibits a classic Howell Mountain Zinfandel aroma of blackberry and black cherry cola upfront. In the glass the wine shows a medium-dark red color with a hint of violet. On the palate, the black cherry cola and white pepper spice dominate the mid-palate with a hint of cassis or licorice coming out across a dark, sustained, 25+ second finish.

"Fruitty and juicy in blackberry cherry, this mountain-grown Zin has soft, integrated tannins and a backbone of spiciness, white pepper mostly, and dark black licorice, that winds, its way through the finish."

"Juicy and fresh with spice, tangy cherry and cassis and good acid structure; balanced and fresh with snappy acidity and lively style; long and bright."

2010 "Old Vine" Zinfandel - SOLD OUT

Howell Mountain

Vintage Notes

2010 was cooler than average allowing the Zinfandel to have an extremely long hang time leading to more subtle and layered flavors. In late August, we experienced several heat spikes which actually helped the fruit to develop, but cool temperatures returned again in early September. Fortunately, a welcome, warm and consistent Indian Summer developed bringing good flavor and color development across the vineyard. Although the yield was down, the fruit barely reached 24 BRIX, providing good balanced flavors that exhibit the classic Howell
Mountain characteristics.

Tasting Notes

At first sight, the wine exhibits a medium-dark red-ruby color with aromas of cassis, blackberry and licorice. On the palate, black cherry cola with a hint of boysenberry dance on the palate and lingers into the finish where hints of black pepper come through supporting a subtle 15-20 second long finish. This wine can be enjoyed now and over the next 5 years.

As big as you expect a Howell Mountain Zin to be, offering rich, deep blackberry, currant, chocolate, licorice, bacon and cedar flavors that are seet and dry at the same time. It's not just powerful in flavor, it's wonderful in structure, with refined tannins and balancing acidity. A minor criticism in some heat from alcohol, but that's the nature of ripe Zindandel."

- Steve Heimoff, November 1, 2013

"Aromas of boysenberries, cherries, blackberries mingle with suggestions of anise and clove on the nose.  Flavors of blackberry, cassis, and black cherry come together with notes of walnut and sweet spice on the palate.  A rich, supple wine that will pair nicely with food now or age well in the cellar, it's a Cab drinker's Zin."
